Dr. Flatter graduated from the University of California in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. He went on to earn his medical degree in 2015 from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and while there served as the Vice-President of the American College of Physicians, Student Chapter.

Dr. Flatter completed his internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin affiliated hospital, St. Joseph's in Milwaukee and his ophthalmology residency at Penn State Eye Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  He has served with World Blindness Outreach in the Dominican Republic providing care for cataract and corneal transplant patients. his Bachelor of Science from St. John’s University in    Collegeville, Minnesota, in 1987. He earned his M.D. from the University of Wisconsin, at Madison in 1992 and then completed a transitional year at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He finished his Ophthalmology Residency at the Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1996. He remained there for his glaucoma fellowship, which he completed in 1997. Dr. Hattenhauer was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, before joining the clinic in 1999.
